Lunar New Year is a holiday that celebrates the beginning of a new year. People in many places in Asia began celebrating it long ago. China is one of these places.

Lunar New Year is based on the Chinese calendar. This calendar uses both the sun and the moon to track time. The date for Lunar New Year changes every year. It can be in January or February.

In the Chinese calendar, each year is given a name. The years are named after 12 different animals. For example, it could be the Year of the Snake. Or it could be the Year of the Horse.

On Lunar New Year, people hang pictures of the year's animal. Many people keep them up until the next Lunar New Year!
