Bill Gates in the 1980s

Bill Gates was born in 1955. He liked to read, do math, and play sports. When he was 13 years old, he got interested in computers.

Today, many people have computers. People use them to learn, work, and have fun. But when Bill was young, computers were really big. Sometimes they were as big as a whole room! People did not have computers in their homes. Most schools did not even have computers. But Bill's school did! Bill spent a lot of time on the computer.

Bill learned about the parts that make up computers. The screen, the keyboard, and other parts that people can touch are called hardware. He also learned about the directions that tell a computer what to do. These directions are called software.

Bill learned how to write software. He could make computers do different things. For example, he wrote software so he could play tic-tac-toe on the computer. He started writing software to help people use computers at home, school, and work.
