Benjamin Franklin grew up in Boston. He is sometimes called Ben Franklin. He had a large family with sixteen brothers and sisters! As a child, he only went to school for two years. But he loved to learn, so he read books at home. Ben Franklin went to work for his older brother when he was just twelve years old. His brother ran a print shop. At the print shop, Ben Franklin made books and newspapers.

When Ben Franklin was seventeen, he moved to Philadelphia. He started his own print shop. He printed a newspaper. He also printed a book called Poor Richard's Almanack. In this book, Ben Franklin wrote about what the weather would be. He also wrote advice like "Time is money." This means that people should not waste time.

Ben Franklin did many things to help the city of Philadelphia. He helped start a library, a fire department, and a school! He was also in charge of Philadelphia's mail. He helped people send letters.

Ben Franklin came up with many new ideas. He used what he learned to help other people. He made a new kind of glasses that helped people see both nearby and far away. He also figured out that lightning is made of electricity. He made something called a lightning rod. A lightning rod is a metal stick on a roof. The rod catches lightning and stops it from hitting the house. This kept houses safe. Ben Franklin's ideas helped many people.
