Susan B. Anthony when she was 28 years old
Susan B. Anthony was born in 1820. When she was growing up, women were not treated the same as men. Women were not allowed to do things that men could do. Susan B. Anthony worked hard to change that.
When Susan was little, she loved to learn. She read lots of books and worked hard in school. But as she grew up, Susan noticed that many other girls did not go to school. They had to stay home to help around the house. Susan thought this was wrong. Her family believed that men and women were equal. Equal means that people are the same and they deserve to be treated the same way.
After Susan B. Anthony grew up, she worked as a teacher. At that time, female teachers were not paid equally. Male teachers made about $10 a month, but female teachers only made $2. Women were paid much less for doing the same work! This bothered Susan B. Anthony. She wanted women to be treated fairly.
Back then, only men could vote. When you vote, you help choose the leaders in the government. Susan B. Anthony believed it was important for women to get to vote. She wanted leaders who would treat women fairly. After teaching for many years, she became a suffragist. Suffragists were people who fought for women to be allowed to vote.
