Neil Armstrong in 1954
Neil Armstrong was born in 1930. When he was six, he rode in an airplane for the first time. He loved it! He wanted to become a pilot. Armstrong learned to fly a plane before he could even drive a car! In college, he learned how to build airplanes.
When Armstrong was nineteen years old, the United States went to war. Armstrong helped by flying planes in the war. When the war ended, he returned to school to continue learning about planes. Afterward, he worked as a test pilot. He flew many new planes to make sure they were safe. He became a skilled pilot.
Around the same time, people started to think about going to space. Space is everything outside Earth, where the Moon and stars are. No one had ever gone to space before. The United States and another country called the Soviet Union raced to be the first to go into space. This race to explore space was called the Space Race.
Both countries worked hard to send the first people to space. People made powerful spaceships that could fly above Earth and into space. These spaceships had to be very strong and very fast. But this made them dangerous. Some spaceships even caught on fire!
In April of 1961, the Soviet Union sent the first person to space. The United States had to catch up! The United States needed people to test the spaceships. But no one knew how to fly spaceships yet, since they were brand new! Neil Armstrong was a great pilot, and he was not afraid to try new things. So, the United States asked Neil Armstrong and some other airplane pilots to try flying spaceships. He became one of the world's first astronauts. An astronaut is a person who goes into space. Neil Armstrong was ready to fly higher than ever before!
