Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also known as Dr. King. He lived at a time when the United States had many unfair laws. These laws kept many places segregated. Segregation means Black people were kept apart from white people. Black people couldn't go to the same schools, parks, and restaurants as white people.
As a child, Martin Luther King Jr. spent a lot of time in church with his family. His father was a church leader. Martin Luther King Jr. enjoyed singing in church, playing sports, and reading. He read many books about famous Black leaders who helped to change the world. In high school, he became known as a great speaker. He won several speaking contests.
When he grew up, Dr. King became a church leader like his father. He started speaking out against segregation. Later, Dr. King joined the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was a group that wanted to end segregation.
Dr. King led many protests. Protests are when people come together to show they want something to change. Protesters were angry that Black people were treated so badly. Some people wanted to fight back. But Dr. King said protesters should be peaceful no matter what. He wanted to make a change without hurting people.
