A photo of Amelia Earhart sitting in a plane
Amelia Earhart was born in 1897. The first airplanes were built when she was a child. Back then, airplanes were not as safe as they are today. Planes were not built well. They would sometimes break or crash. It was also easy for pilots to get lost. So, pilots had to fly close to the ground so they could see where they were going. Every flight was dangerous!
Even though they were dangerous, planes were exciting. When Earhart was 23 years old, she rode in a plane for the first time. She loved it! She decided to become a pilot right away.
Earhart was a brave and skilled pilot. Two years after her first ride in an airplane, she set her first flying record. She flew higher in the sky than any woman had flown before. But she wanted to do something even bigger!
Earhart decided to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by herself. She flew for 15 hours. At the end of her flight, her plane leaked gas, and a fire started! She had to land quickly to put out the fire. But her flight was a success. She was the first woman to fly a plane across the Atlantic Ocean alone.
At the time, most pilots were men. Many people did not think women could be pilots. But Amelia Earhart's long and dangerous flight across the Atlantic Ocean showed that women could be pilots, too. Her record- setting flight made her famous. She earned awards for her bravery and flying skills.
During Amelia Earhart's life, flying was dangerous. Which of the following are reasons why flying was dangerous? Pick two.
Plane windows were too small for pilots to see well.
