Harriet Tubman in the 1860s
Harriet Tubman was born in the United States in 1822. When Tubman was young, the United States allowed slavery. Slavery means a person is owned by someone else and forced to work for them. Enslaved people had to do hard work without being paid. They were not free to go where they wanted. Enslaved people could be hurt if they didn't do what they were told. Many Black people were enslaved in the United States.
