Harriet Tubman in the 1860s

Harriet Tubman was born in the United States in 1822. When Tubman was young, the United States allowed slavery. Slavery means a person is owned by someone else and forced to work for them. Enslaved people had to do hard work without being paid. They were not free to go where they wanted. Enslaved people could be hurt if they didn't do what they were told. Many Black people were enslaved in the United States.

Tubman grew up on a large farm in the South. When she was a child, she had to work all day long. She cooked and cleaned the house for the people who enslaved her. She also had to do hard work outside. She farmed in fields and carried heavy logs.

Enslaved people were often sold and taken away from their families. Tubman had many brothers and sisters. When she was young, three of her sisters were sold and taken far away. Tubman did not know if she would ever see them again. She did not want her family to be enslaved.

So, when Harriet Tubman was twenty-seven years old, she decided to escape from slavery. To escape means to run away from the people who enslaved her. Not all states in the U.S. allowed slavery. States in the South did, but most states in the North did not. So, Tubman went north alone. She escaped by walking at night, following a bright star called the North Star. It helped her find her way to freedom in the North.
