Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday. Día de los Muertos means "Day of the Dead" in Spanish. This holiday is a happy time to remember people who have died. People believe that the spirits of the dead come back to visit the living on Día de los Muertos. The spirits of children come to visit on the first day, and the spirits of adults come to visit on the second.

To prepare for the visit, people carefully decorate graves. A grave is a place where a dead person is buried. During Día de los Muertos, people clean the graves. They use candles and flowers to add light and color to the graves. They bring food to the graves to have a party. Some people stay all night to visit with the spirits of the dead.

People celebrate Día de los Muertos on November 1st and 2nd. That is right after Halloween, but the two holidays are very different. On Halloween, people dress up like scary ghosts and monsters. But on Día de los Muertos, the dead are not scary. People believe the spirits come back to celebrate with the people they love.
