Amelia Earhart was born in 1897. The first airplanes were built when she was a child. Back then, airplanes were not as safe as they are today. Planes were not built well. They would sometimes break or crash. It was also easy for pilots to get lost. So, pilots had to fly close to the ground so they could see where they were going. Every flight was dangerous!
