Thomas Jefferson was born in Virginia in 1743. As a child, he loved to learn. He spent a lot of time reading and writing. He grew up to be a great writer.

When Thomas Jefferson was young, America was not a country. It belonged to another country called Great Britain. People in America had to follow Great Britain's rules.

Many people did not like that Great Britain was in charge of America. Thomas Jefferson was one of those people. So, he wrote the Declaration of Independence. It said that Great Britain was not in charge of America anymore. America would be its own country, called the United States of America.

Thomas Jefferson wrote about many important ideas in the Declaration of Independence. He wrote that everyone should be equal and free. Being equal means that everyone should be treated the same way. Being free means that people can make their own choices. When people are free, they can do what they want to do.
