Martin Luther King Jr.

Every January, Americans celebrate a holiday for a man named Martin Luther King Jr. He is also known as Dr. King or MLK. He was an important leader who worked to make America a better place.

Dr. King saw that people were treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. Many places were segregated. Segregated means that black people were kept apart from white people. Black people couldn't go to the same schools as white people. They had to sit at the back of the bus. And they weren't allowed to go to many of the places like restaurants, swimming pools, and hotels that white people went to.

Dr. King wanted this to change. He became a leader in the civil rights movement. This movement was a group of thousands of black and white people. They thought that everyone should be treated fairly.
