Jackie Robinson when he played for the Dodgers

Jackie Robinson was born in 1919. At that time, many places were segregated. Segregated means that Black people were kept apart from white people. They could not go to the same schools or use the same bathrooms.

Growing up, Jackie Robinson was great at sports. When he went to college, he played many different sports. After college, Jackie Robinson became a baseball player. In baseball, people use a stick called a bat to hit a small ball.

Jackie loved to play baseball. But baseball was segregated. The most famous baseball teams were part of the Major League. Only white people could join the Major League. Black people had to play on their own teams. Their teams were not as famous. And Black players made less money.

One Major League Baseball team was called the Dodgers. The Dodgers had a boss who thought segregation was wrong. The boss asked Jackie Robinson to play for the Dodgers. Jackie agreed. When Jackie joined the team, it was no longer segregated. This showed people that Black and white players could be on the same team.
