Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809. His family was poor. They lived in a log house with only one room. They worked hard on their farm. As a child, Lincoln planted seeds in the fields. He even cut logs with an ax.

Working on the farm kept Lincoln very busy. He did not have much time to go to school. But he loved to read. He kept a book in his pocket while he worked. Sometimes, he walked a long way to borrow books from his neighbors.

As Lincoln grew, he learned many things through books. He liked to learn about laws. So he decided to become a lawyer. A lawyer is someone who can help people if they have a problem with the law. Later, Lincoln helped make laws in government. Finally, he became the 16th president of the United States.
