In everyday language, the terms

and right all mean roughly the same thing: they all help people live their lives as they wish without interference. But political scientists sometimes distinguish between different categories of freedoms. One of these categories is called civil

liberties.

Civil liberties are freedoms for people to do as they wish without the government interfering. The Framers of the Constitution believed that limiting the power of the government was the best way to keep people free. So, they enacted restrictions to prevent the government from passing laws or taking actions that keep people from doing as they wish.

Since civil liberties are specifically about freedom from government interference, protections focus on limiting government powers. Most civil liberties in the United States are protected by the Bill of Rights and other amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The first five amendments protect some of the most important civil liberties, including the freedom of expression, the freedom to bear arms, and protections for people accused of crimes.
