Galaxies are classified into three main types: spiral, elliptical, and irregular.

Elliptical galaxies are typically spherical or egg- shaped. They are usually between and light- years in diameter, but some span more than light- years! Most elliptical galaxies lack large amounts of gas and dust, so there is little to no active star formation within them. Although some elliptical galaxies contain trillions of stars, most of these stars are old. The stars can orbit the galactic core in multiple directions.
