A rotation is a type of

transformation

that turns a figure around a fixed point, called the center of

rotation.

When you rotate a figure, the original figure is called the

preimage.

The rotated figure is called the

image.

For example, the preimage below is rotated 90° counterclockwise to create the image.

A preimage and its rotated image are

congruent

which means they have the same size and shape. Because of this, rotations are considered a type of congruence

transformation,
