An insect is standing on a tree trunk. The insect is light brown. Its body and legs are long and thin.

Stick insects are a tasty snack for birds and other animals. But these bugs have a tricky way to hide. They look like sticks! They also don't move much. This makes them hard to spot in the trees where they live.

Some stick insects also have colorful wings that help keep them safe. They keep their wings closed until other animals come near. Then, the stick insects show their wings in a bright flash. This scares the animals away and gives the stick insects time to hide.

Stick insects have another neat trick. A stick insect can get away even if a bird catches it by the leg. The stick insect just lets its leg fall off! Luckily, stick insects can grow back any legs they lose.

Why is it hard for birds to see stick insects?

What bird eats its food with a spoon? A spoonbill does! Its beak is shaped like a long spoon.

When a spoonbill eats, it walks slowly through water. It puts its beak in the water and moves the beak from side to side. When the spoonbill finds a crab or fish, it scoops up the snack and eats it!

Spoonbills in the U.S. have pink and white feathers. But spoonbills lose the feathers on their heads as they grow up. Their heads are yellow-green without these feathers.

Sometimes spoonbills do something called sky gazing. This happens when they see other spoonbills flying by. They stick their long necks and beaks straight up and gaze at the sky. A spoonbill in flight is a beautiful sight!

How does a roseate spoonbill catch food?

It tips over rocks to find crabs and fish.

It scoops up crabs and fish with its beak.

It digs a big hole that traps crabs and fish.
